The events in Montana left a mark on how David perceived the deaths of Julian and Wesley, Julian died from a stroke, and Wesley got cancer. Although there were significant reasons that these deaths occurred such as Wesley's diet and Julians cigar smoking, deep down David knew it was because of what happened in Montana over forty years before. David thought that they died because the secret they held, was eating away at them for years. What had happened in Montana also change the way David perceived his memories of Marie. The adult David's favorite memory of Marie was in the autumn before the summer of 1948, when David was playing football with Marie and Ronnie Tall Bear. This was the first time that David felt like he was part of a family, other than blood or birthright. David had always wanted that relationship with his dad, but he was always working, so he finally gets this relationship with Ronnie and Marie.
