So far, this is my favorite quote because while reading this you can tell that Mr. Spencer wants him to understand life's not a joke. I think this quote shows that Mr. Spencer really actually cares about him and wants him to succeed in life. It relates to the book because Holden has already been kicked out of many schools, so I think Mr. Spencer is relating life to a game to try to get his point across.
Why do you think Mr. Spencer is lecturing Holden, even though Holden was already kicked out?

I think that Spencer still lectured Holden because even though he already flunked out, he still wants Holden to become stronger in his ability to work. Flunking out of Pencey was bad enough and I think that Spencer doesn't want Holden to flunk out of another school. Spencer is teaching Holden a good lesson on how to look at life.
I think that Mr. Spencer is lecturing Holden because he truly cares about him. He wants Holden to do well in schools.
I think spencer was still lecturing Holden because he still believed that he could make something of himself.
I think Mr. Spencer lectured Holden because even though he was kicked out of the school, Mr. Spencer still cares about Holden and wants him to try hard and succeed in life.
I think the Mr. Spencer was lecturing Holden because he cares about him and just because he messed up doesn't mean he should stop caring about life. He also wanted Holden to see that life isn't a joke and he should take it seriously
Mr. Spencer might have wanted to say goodbye or lecture him about that he could accomplish so many things if he just tried. Or because he wanted to wish him good luck in his next school.
I believe that Spencer had lectured holden because he wants him to know how to take life more seriously and not only like a game. also that he wanted him to do better in school, and like in general.
I think that Mr. Spencer is lecturing Holden because he wants to make sure that Holden doesn't make the same mistake as he had in Pencey and in the other schools that he was kicked out of. He cares about Holden and hopes that he has a better future.
