Phony; Prethinking Catcher in the Rye

To be phony means to be fake, and to pretend to be someone you are not. I believe most adults are better at being phony than children because they have more experience and they know that they can pretend to be nice or kind, to get people to like them, when children do not really care what people think of them, so they just act like themselves.
One experience I remember someone being phony to me was when I was when I was having a huge birthday party. Many people that I had never spoken to before started talking to me because they heard about my party.
